Experimental and numerical analysis of a hybrid WEC-breakwater system combining an oscillating water column and an oscillating buoy

Integrating multi-type Wave Energy Converters (WECs) enables wave energy to be extracted from multiple harvesting manners simultaneously, which presents a more competitive conversion technology. In this study, an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) and Buoy (OB) are combined devise hybrid WEC system that serves as floating breakwater. The two devices aligned in line with the incident direction, where OB is deployed upstream OWC. A series of physical experiments conducted understand working principle system. After fully non-linear time-domain model validated by measured data, comparisons its respective isolated devicesare emphasised. Then, hydrodynamic dependence comprehensively tested. results indicated design provides higher well better attenuation performance compared OWC devices. Additionally, outperforms terms conversion. OWC-OB gap resonance has negative impact on extraction but negligible effect attenuation. deeper draft symmetric wall performs both long-period waves. overall efficiency decreases increase draft, transmission coefficient follows opposite trend. PTO dampings dominate coefficient, respectively. • Hydrodynamics WEC-breakwater investigated experimentally. nonlinear numerical developed cross-check data. Higher realized leads sudden reduction Two systems play different roles performance.
